Managing Access and HE departments and

assessing the feasibility of HE study

contact

Over the last couple of years, I have been contracted to manage Access to HE provision at Morley College and to act as the Interim HE Manager for Sunderland College. In order to fulfil these duties, I called upon my extensive knowledge of codes of practice, regulations and governance of Access and HE courses to ensure these departments not only maintained their standards, but were enhanced during the time I spent developing them. To that end, I was successful in designing new Access programmes and boosting enrolment numbers during my time at Morley College, while the three months I spent working at City of Sunderland College included successful application for two HEFCE Catalyst Fund bids, undertaking programme development work over the entire curriculum, updating involvement with the DLHE and NSS and preparation work on an Access Agreement for OFFA. If you need an interim manager for your department or are thinking of developing Higher Education, I can provide a service based on this management experience, as well as my career as a Programme Leader and time spent on many validating bodies. I can also offer a  basic feasibility study, consisting of an on-site fact-finding study and document presenting the opinions and objectives of key teaching and administrative staff. By employing my considerable practical experience of the real-life issues involved in the introduction and expansion of HE, particularly within the FE sector, I can present an accurate appraisl with recommendations based on the thoughts of those that would be involved 'on the ground'. It is my aim to help all my clients get the very best results for institution, staff and potential learners.

If development has been agreed or is underway, I can help prepare staff with several presentations on Higher Education, ranging from its contextual place within education to twelve questions any potential provider should ask before embarking on specific course design. Due to my significant HE in FE experience (and more 'traditional' HE experience as an External Examiner for several Universities), I can tailor these presentations to any area of focus required or produce entirely new materials as required. I am happy to talk formally or informally on any topic, from analysing initial course documentation to supporting staff CPD who may be reticent or unsure about their ability to teach beyond Level 3.

The very early stages of HE developmental discussion need informed guidance and an experienced eye to look out for potential problems in programme design, issues with support and existing facilities, local or regional competition and whether a market exists for the proposal. As part of any feasibility study or subsequent strategy, I will also undertake a detailed analysis of existing provision and, by using my unique approach to potential competition of Avoid, Complement or Engage, suggest the best curriculum development options. My thorough understanding of HNC, HND, Access to HE, Foundation and Honours Degree design can bring fast and well-informed conclusions.
