Research and Resources

While I know a lot about the geography, technology and history of the content within 'Lokomotive', I found myself having to undertake careful and, at times, highly detailed research for specific references throughout the novel. In addition to my own extensive library of WWII material the internet did, inevitably, come into its own - particularly for photographs for the extensive 'mood sheet' I used while writing. Some of the images have been presented on this site, and I attribute all copyright and ownership to those who took them without any intention to profit by their presentation.

There is, as you will certainly know, a lot of information on the web. Many sites might look authentic, but either recyle innaccuracies from other sources or represent good information poorly. With a PhD in Creative Writing from Lancaster University, my research skills were up to the challenge. Listed below are a series of links to some of the more unusual sites I visited. It will hopefully give you an insight into the the world of 'Lokomotive' and while flavour is one thing, I won't be serving up any spoilers for the book. Each link opens in a new window.

A fascinating page on the 1920s-designed amazing 'flying' train, the Schienenzeppelin - with some rare footage to show you I wasn't making it up for the book

Absolutely everything you will ever need to know about German Radio Intelligence in WWII

Quite an old site that rather amusingly calls itself 'train porn' - but some beautiful machinery

While we're on the subject, if you enjoy art deco and streamlined machines, dieselpunks.org is great

La Coupole wasn't the only rocket base in that region of France as shown on thi spacge covering Foret d'Eperlecques

A thoroughly researched and fascinating precis of the Special Operations Executive (SOE)
